CHAPTER 9

“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it for breakfast.”

I glanced at Noah as he drove, his hand resting on the steering wheel, the other casually draped across the center console. His profile was calm, but I could hear a trace of regret in his voice.

“It’s okay,” I said, reaching over and giving his arm a gentle squeeze. “Everyone knows you’re working. I told my mom we’d get together with them for dinner tonight. They’re leaving tomorrow morning, and honestly, I already feel kind of sad about it.”

After spending the morning with my family, I realized I just wanted to sit across from them, talk about everything and nothing, and never have them leave.

But I missed Noah, even though we’d only been apart for a few hours. I’d texted him to see if he could meet me for lunch. As luck would have it, he was free—and eager. I had already told him about my conversation with Taylor and how it had left both Hailey and me unsettled.

He gave a slight nod, keeping his eyes on the road. “When we get some time, we’ll drive out to Arizona and stay with them for a few days.”

I smiled at the idea. “That would be a lot of fun. Maybe in the fall, when the weather’s cooled down a little.”

Just thinking about the sweltering Arizona summer sun made me sweat. Even a few days sounded unbearable. Fall, though? That I could handle. Warm days, cool evenings, and the kind of sunsets that made you stop and just look.

“Sounds good,” he said, turning into the restaurant’s parking lot.

The salty breeze from the ocean drifted through the cracked window, mingling with the scent of fried seafood from the kitchen vents nearby. My stomach grumbled in anticipation.

Just as he eased the car into a spot near the front entrance, his phone rang. He pulled it from the console, glanced at the screen, and frowned.

Without a word, he answered. “Yeah?”

His voice dropped a bit, and he went quiet, listening intently. My eyes stayed on his face, reading the shift in his expression. After a moment, he ended the call and set the phone down, already reaching for the gearshift. “There’s been a break-in at the wedding venue.”

I gasped, my heart skipping a beat. “Seriously?”

My mind immediately went to Helen and everything she was already going through. First Archie’s murder, and now this? My stomach twisted, the excitement of lunch with my new husband replaced by a knot of worry.

Noah put the car back into gear, already shifting into work mode. I could feel the change in his posture, his attention sharpening.
